Herpes Zoster( "flying snake" or Snake skin in Chinese). Anyone who has had chicken pox can develop herpes zoster since herpes zoster is caused by the same virus as chicken pox. After the chicken pox clears, the virus remains dormant within certain nerve cells of the body. When the virus reactivates, zoster,which can be quite painfuL, develops. A temporary weakness in immunity may cause the virus to multiply and move along the nerve fibers toward the skin. On a hot summer eve about 30 years ago, one of my granduncles had gotten a strange disease. He had blisters all over his body from his waist up to his chest, and I guess it hurt because he moaned in pain for days. Painful was probably my first impression of "flying snake."
I thought my encounter with "the snake" was over, but about twenty years ago, during a winter vacation trip, I had the chance to personally experience the bite of "flying snake" : first a few blisters appeared on the middle part of my forearm; then there was this burning sensation.I thought it was folliculitis at first and ignored it, but two days later after the blisters had gotten worse, a couple medical students on the same trip figured it was zoster. Suffering from a great amount of discomfort, a thought of my granduncle crossed my mind--l was feeling bad about what he had to go through then, but my experience with the flying snake was even more unfortunate. I was in the middle of nowhere, the nearest town was three days away, and so I could only grit my teeth and bear the pain. By the time I got to the hospital, my arm was inflamed and festered, and I was in great deal of pain. To this day my heart still palpitates with fear at thethought of the "flying snake."

One of the patients I remember the most was this sixty-year old lady who had been bothered by zoster for more than a year.
